Frequently Asked Questions

1. How is Pilates different from Yoga?
Pilates has a strong focus on core stability, working from the inside out. Also in Pilates we teach thoracic breathing that directly relates to the flow of the movement being performed. Pilates can be tailor made to suit an individuals needs.

2. What do I wear?
Comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely. Preferably not too baggy as I will need to see how your body is moving. No shoes are required but socks are recommended and minimal jewellery.

3. Is Pilates suitable if you've got an injury?
During your enrolment your injury or any physical problems will be discussed and in some cases a doctor, osteopath or physiotherapist may need to be contacted. Once this has been organised you will be able to go ahead with Pilates and I will give you exercises that suit your needs.

4. Do I need to bring a mat?
I will provide you with all the equipment you need. Some people prefer to have their own equipment but this is entirely up to you.

5. Can I do drop-Ins?
Body Control teachers do not offer drop-ins to clients they have not seen before. This is because we like to be familiar with your body and its needs before we enrol you into a class. However there is the opportunity for you to switch classes if you inform me first and you are an existing client.

6. What happens if I can't make a session in my block?
If you let me know before the session, it is possible for you to make up the session in another class, if there is space.

7. Why do I have to do the workshop or private lessons before I join a group?
It is important that you take these classes so that you understand the Pilates method. Unlike other exercise classes where you just follow the instructor, Pilates requires you to concentrate and focus on your breathing and to understand how your body is moving when you perform an exercise.

8. I have done Pilates before. Do I still need to see you before I am put into a class?
Yes, even if you have done Pilates before I need to see the way that you move and be informed of any injuries you may have.

9. I haven't exercised for ages, will I be able to do it?
Of course, Pilates is for everyone. Anyone of any age and fitness can benefit from this method.

10. How often should I do Pilates?
At least once a week, but 2 or more sessions is better. As with any form of exercise you will improve and notice changes more quickly the more you do it.

11. Will Pilates help me to lose weight?
The aim of Pilates isn't to help with weight loss. It concentrates on strengthening muscles and so does add tone, and, so longer, leaner muscles. For weight loss Pilates is best teamed with some form of cardio exercise, such as running or brisk walking.

12. When will I notice a difference in my body from doing Pilates?
That depends on how often you do Pilates and your own level of fitness. After one lesson you will have developed an awareness of your body that you didn't have before. "In 10 sessions, you will feel the difference. In 20, you will see the difference. And in 30, you'll be on your way to having a whole new body." Joseph Pilates.
